Customized Letterman Sweater

If you’ve received an Uncommon Goods catalog in the past few weeks, you may remember seeing this Customized Letterman Sweater. This item is only available through Uncommon Goods but there are a few other businesses involved (including us).  Like our tagline says “Every Garment Tells a Story”.

This story begins with our original partnership with Ripon Athletic.  A few years ago, through a network of friends, it came to our attention that Ripon Athletic was a bit slower during the fall season (when football season was underway and baseball uniform production was yet to begin). We asked if they’d be interested in helping us sew our sock monkey mittens during that time. They accepted and it really helped both of our companies to have that arrangement.  A year later, Uncommon Goods came to us, asking for a spring skirt that had an athletic feel, we knew just the people to help us fulfill that request.

As our relationship with Ripon Athletic continued we were thrilled to find out that they were the owners of the authentic Sand Knit label.   It could be found on athletic uniforms, apparel, and letterman jackets.  Items with that label were considered to be vintage by many, as it hadn’t been in production for years. Uncommon Goods and Ripon Athletic are now producing a Customized Letterman Sweater with the authentic Sand Knit label.   We are proud to be in business with both of these amazing companies and happy to have been a key stepping stone for their partnership.

But let’s be honest, the best part of this sweater is that your main squeeze can wear it to all of your games!

Organic Cotton Shirts with Water-based Inks

One component of our company is built upon the mission to create clothing items that are produced in a way that does the least amount of damage possible to the environment.  Many of you probably have heard the term organic cotton and maybe even the term water-based inks but you might not know exactly what those terms mean.  Today we’re sharing a video that speaks to the definition of both of those terms and why using these methods are an important way to protect our environment.

5 Things: The Atlanta Gift Show

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of sitting down with Sandy Martin to talk to her about the 2012 Atlanta Gift Show.  The show was held July 11th-18th and was made up of 4000 temporary exhibits like us, as well as 5000 permanent showrooms. All were housed within three, separate multi-level buildings.  Here are 5 things I asked Sandy about the show:

1. How was your show experience this year:

This year the show was a great success.  It was wonderful to see our existing customers again and the customers in general were very friendly, which always make for a more enjoyable experience.   It was nice to see the enthusiasm towards our new line.  Last year, customers were a bit unsure of our knit sweaters but this year they were thrilled to see that the line had been expanded. Customers were also extremely excited about our fall knit tops.

2. What item(s) seemed to receive the best response:

Oh gosh, well, the santa tee (available 9/25) was a hit AGAIN at this show.  For whatever reason “he” just always seems to be a classic icon that people can’t get enough of :-)  The same rings true for our whole sock monkey line, people love it.  As far as a new line item, our dog sit stay handwarmers really won people over.  Customers loved the “sit and stay” expression on the palms.  Before going to a show there are always a few items we are anxious to present and this year it was our EIEIO men’s shirt (available 7/25).  We were pleasantly surprised when we received many positive reactions and that people really understood our humor and our inspiration.

3. How was attendance this year compared to past shows you’ve been to:

Attendance seemed to be down a bit but we were lucky to have had our best sales in our history of attending the show. On a merchandising side of things we heard many comments on how good the product line is this year!  We may try to move our booth next year because there is a USA made section at the show and we feel that our brand would fit best in that area.

4. How was the weather in the south:

HOT, HUMID & MUGGY!!  Before leaving the hotel on the first morning I straightened my normally curly hair.  I didn’t give the weather much thought since I’d be indoors all day. Well, on the 1/2 mile walk over to the show, my hair went from stick, stick straight to uncontrollable super curl!  When I later went into CVS to buy a (sold-out) clipboard, I came back with a straightener instead!  Thankfully the show was very cool and comfortable so my hair remained curl free!

5. What’s your favorite place to eat while visiting Atlanta:

If you are ever in downtown Atlanta I would highly recommend the Peasant Bistro, it was wonderful both in service and food.

Thanks Sandy!

Bananas and Chocolate

To me bananas and chocolate are a fantastic treat when combined.  So when the banana’s on my counter were uneaten day after day, I smiled.  This recipe is so good and can easily be frozen for the impromptu visitor.  I changed the recipe just a little bit by omitting the nuts for the sweet addition of milk chocolate chips.  Enjoy!

New QR Codes

Our company gets asked many questions related to our products; What is organic cotton, water-based inks, pre-consumer recycled cotton or re-engineered products.   With the help of these fancy little Quick Response (QR) Codes we can now answer those questions with a push of a button.  In our fall 2012 wholesale catalog you will find several codes throughout the booklet, and if you have a smart phone you will instantly be linked to a video that speaks to each of those questions.

To use a green3 QR code, you must have a smartphone with a camera (such as an Android, iPhone or iPod Touch, or Blackberry) and a QR scanning application.  Recommended free apps that can be downloaded through your phone’s app store are:

iPhone/iPod Touch

  • NeoReader
  • Scan
  • QR Reader for iPhone

Android

  • ScanLife Barcode Reader
  • QuickMark Barcode Scanner
  • i-nigma Barcode Scanner

Blackberry

  • QR Code Scanner (Newgen Graphics)
  • QR Code Scanner Pro Free (The Jared Company)
  • Code Muncher QR Reader

Once you have downloaded a QR scanning application, simply open it and direct your phone’s camera toward the code. Hold still, and wait for the application to redirect you to a green3 YouTube video.  We hope you enjoy our videos.

Keeping It Fresh

July 4th was once again a fun day of celebration across the country and frankly I’m exhausted from all of that celebrating.  But for whatever reason when the bbq’s and fireworks are over I always feel as if summer is slipping away at an even faster rate.  So today I want to share a few things that will help to keep my summer memories fresh.  Does the 4th mark the downward turn of summer for you?  What are some of your favorite summer images?  How do you hold on to such a quick season?

Flags and sailboats

Farmer's market fresh

Garden fresh tomatoes

A row of adirondack chairs

Lavender with a lake view

Prepared fresh fruit

Music To My…Catalog? Part 2

Like we promised last week, here are the rest of our catalog covers with links to the songs that inspired their titles.  Oh and also a look at our newest Fall 2012 cover!

Fall 2011, “Forever Autumn”.  A beautiful song that is somewhat under the radar, performed by the Moody Blues.  As expected, very orchestral, deep, and classic Moody Blues.

Spring 2012 , “Time of the Season”.  Honestly, no heavy meaning here!  Just a personal indulgence for me.  This is one of my favorite 60’s songs, and features a classic bass line that has served as inspiration for many bands that followed.  This song feels like summer.  It makes you want to put the windows down and drive just a little faster!

Fall 2012, “Harvest Moon”.  Neil Young is an icon, and as of late is making a comeback in many ways.  His sound and style are distinctive, and his influence can be found in contemporary artists like John Mayer and others.  The sound and lyrics of this classic Fall song are perfect for the look and feel of our brand this season.

So what do you think?  We will be sending out our new catalog to our wholesale customers in early July and we can’t wait for you to see all of our new Fall and Holiday items!  (psst…see that QR code on the cover, we’ll tell you ALL about it in an upcoming post).
