A Family Affair

If you’ve been receiving our wholesale catalog over the last 3-4 years you most definitely noticed the common occurence of a changing clothing line.  Over those years however, one thing has stayed the same and maybe you’ve noticed or perhaps you haven’t.  The same model has been in our catalog since the spring of 2010.  In that first catalog her little sister was on the cover and they both were within the pages of it.

Little sister

Fast forward to our most recent catalog, flip to the back cover and you will find two little girls having fun with our sock monkey throws.  You may have already guessed but those two little girls belong to our model, making our catalog a true family affair! Here is an instagram photo of the girls getting ready for the shoot.

10 Fun Facts

Over the years many unique things about our company have gone on without mention.  Not for any specific reason but maybe just for the simple fact that things get busy and frankly, often forgotten.  So today I thought it would be fun to let you in on a few fun and most likely unknown facts about green 3.

1)  Jim and Sandy Martin are married business partners and the owners of green 3.

2)  We will use three to four thousands holiday sweaters for our Christmas Sweater Skirt this season.

3)  We ship to over 1,000 speciality stores nationwide.

4)  The number 3 in green 3, stands for Jim, Sandy and their daughter Rachael.

5)  Our catalog model writes our blogs and newsletters.

6)  We will use roughly, 35,000 ties this season to produce our Tie Wrap Skirt.

7)  Our most popular item is the Santa Double-Up Tee.

8)   In addition to specialty stores, we also sell to many museums.  Including the Museum of Folk Art in Manhattan, the JFK Presidential Museum, and the Art Museums in Philadelphia, Houston, and Seattle.

9)  Our first catalog or brochure, as we called it then, was made up of only one page.  The images were hand drawn t-shirts and all of them were white.

10)  Our first office was just one room in an old, closed department store.  We now occupy 18,0000 square feet of space.

green 3′s Art Director

Today we have an employee interview you won’t want to pass on reading!   We want to introduce you to Jane, our Art Director.  Since the birth of the company in 2006, every item that has a graphic on it, Jane has designed and more often has even hand drawn it.

How did you get the job at green 3?

I was working with Jim on a freelance job for Oshkosh B’Gosh and he asked if I would meet with his wife, Sandy to help design a logo for her new business venture.  That was in August 2005, so it’s been 7 years already!

What is your favorite item (past or present) from the green 3 line?

From a graphics point of view, I really liked how both the butterfly kite tee and the peacock v-neck tee came out.

Favorite G3 moment;

Shooting the catalogs are always SO much fun!

What do you do for fun or what is something you are passionate about?

Hanging out with my family.  Our family runs in many different directions during the weekdays but we all make an effort to go to church on Sunday and spend the rest of the day as a family unit.

Something interesting about you or your family;

People don’t always realize that I’m half Asian and half Polish.  My mom is from Korea and because of that I wasn’t raised in the typical fashion of my peers.  I always felt that because of all the wonderful things my mom taught us that I should have been born in a past generation.

A “green” aspect of your life that you are proud to say you do?

I don’t like to throw things away and try my best to repurpose it.  I use milk jugs as paint buckets and have repurposed several old dressers, turning one into a new entertainment center.

If someone asked for your advice about pursuing a career in graphic design what would you tell them?

Plan to go to college and get a formal education.  Even if your portfolio is strong you probably won’t get your foot in the door without it.  Send your portfolio with your resume and don’t forget that your resume is representative of your graphic design background it shouldn’t just be a plain white piece of paper.  Design your resume so it will stand out among the others.

Green3’s take on Jane:  I have been around a lot of artists throughout my corporate career, and Jane possesses a skill that is incredibly valuable to any brand.  She thinks in terms of the ultimate consumer and what they will like, as opposed to just what she likes.  Jane is able to move outside of her personal likes or dislikes, and passionately focus on making every piece of art be what’s best for the brand and the consumer we target.

5 Things: The Atlanta Gift Show

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of sitting down with Sandy Martin to talk to her about the 2012 Atlanta Gift Show.  The show was held July 11th-18th and was made up of 4000 temporary exhibits like us, as well as 5000 permanent showrooms. All were housed within three, separate multi-level buildings.  Here are 5 things I asked Sandy about the show:

1. How was your show experience this year:

This year the show was a great success.  It was wonderful to see our existing customers again and the customers in general were very friendly, which always make for a more enjoyable experience.   It was nice to see the enthusiasm towards our new line.  Last year, customers were a bit unsure of our knit sweaters but this year they were thrilled to see that the line had been expanded. Customers were also extremely excited about our fall knit tops.

2. What item(s) seemed to receive the best response:

Oh gosh, well, the santa tee (available 9/25) was a hit AGAIN at this show.  For whatever reason “he” just always seems to be a classic icon that people can’t get enough of :-)  The same rings true for our whole sock monkey line, people love it.  As far as a new line item, our dog sit stay handwarmers really won people over.  Customers loved the “sit and stay” expression on the palms.  Before going to a show there are always a few items we are anxious to present and this year it was our EIEIO men’s shirt (available 7/25).  We were pleasantly surprised when we received many positive reactions and that people really understood our humor and our inspiration.

3. How was attendance this year compared to past shows you’ve been to:

Attendance seemed to be down a bit but we were lucky to have had our best sales in our history of attending the show. On a merchandising side of things we heard many comments on how good the product line is this year!  We may try to move our booth next year because there is a USA made section at the show and we feel that our brand would fit best in that area.

4. How was the weather in the south:

HOT, HUMID & MUGGY!!  Before leaving the hotel on the first morning I straightened my normally curly hair.  I didn’t give the weather much thought since I’d be indoors all day. Well, on the 1/2 mile walk over to the show, my hair went from stick, stick straight to uncontrollable super curl!  When I later went into CVS to buy a (sold-out) clipboard, I came back with a straightener instead!  Thankfully the show was very cool and comfortable so my hair remained curl free!

5. What’s your favorite place to eat while visiting Atlanta:

If you are ever in downtown Atlanta I would highly recommend the Peasant Bistro, it was wonderful both in service and food.

Thanks Sandy!

Music To My…Catalog? Part 2

Like we promised last week, here are the rest of our catalog covers with links to the songs that inspired their titles.  Oh and also a look at our newest Fall 2012 cover!

Fall 2011, “Forever Autumn”.  A beautiful song that is somewhat under the radar, performed by the Moody Blues.  As expected, very orchestral, deep, and classic Moody Blues.

Spring 2012 , “Time of the Season”.  Honestly, no heavy meaning here!  Just a personal indulgence for me.  This is one of my favorite 60’s songs, and features a classic bass line that has served as inspiration for many bands that followed.  This song feels like summer.  It makes you want to put the windows down and drive just a little faster!

Fall 2012, “Harvest Moon”.  Neil Young is an icon, and as of late is making a comeback in many ways.  His sound and style are distinctive, and his influence can be found in contemporary artists like John Mayer and others.  The sound and lyrics of this classic Fall song are perfect for the look and feel of our brand this season.

So what do you think?  We will be sending out our new catalog to our wholesale customers in early July and we can’t wait for you to see all of our new Fall and Holiday items!  (psst…see that QR code on the cover, we’ll tell you ALL about it in an upcoming post).

Music To My…Catalog? Part 1

As many of you know Sandy Martin started green3 in 2006 and was later joined by her husband Jim.  Today, Jim is hear to share a little secret with you about how each of our catalogs are named.

green3’s first true catalog was released in the Fall of 2009, and featured a combination of immediate Fall deliveries, as well as a glimpse of what Spring 2010 was going to look like.  I had been a fan of George Winston’s classic piano album “Winter into Spring”, and it seemed like a perfect name for this catalog.  I also liked the idea of “naming” catalogs, as opposed to just having the season and year on them.  With that, the concept of linking every green3 catalog with a seasonally appropriate musical reference was born.

Spring 2010, “ Morning Has Broken”.  This Cat Steven’s song fit for many reasons.  Obviously this song has strong references to the newness associated with the Spring season, but also we were coming off the global financial meltdown of 2009, and everyone was hopeful that 2010 was going to be the start of a recovery.

Fall 2010, “Autumn Leaves”.  This song has been performed by many artists, but was made famous by the incomparable Nat King Cole.  This is a beautiful song about more than just the change of seasons.

Spring 2011, “Summer in the City”.  This is the summertime classic by The Lovin’ Spoonful.  Our Spring 11 line featured many sun drenched colors, and at the time we were really inspired by the revitalization of many urban settings across the US.  This song seemed like a perfect match.

We will post up the remaining catalog names next week and Jim will be back to reveal the name and image of our Fall 2012 catalog!

Feeling Like Fall?

Thankfully we do have a few months of warm weather to look forward to yet, but a few weeks ago we had to channel a bit of autumn for our Fall/Holiday photo shoot.  It was a blue sky and brisk kind of morning, when we arrived at our lakeside, shoot location.  This venue offered up many great shots inside and out. Although an hour after our arrival the lake fly invasion happened. They must have been hatching at that exact moment, filling up all the windows with their little bodies.   Our hopes for some outdoor photograph’s “buzzed” right by!

A little tweaking.

Minus that unexpected arrival , our Fall 2012 catalog shoot went smoothly. We are all excited for the new line, as we have incorporated many high end fabrics into it.  Some of our new pieces are fun and playful and others have a dressed up feel to them.  A wide variety for many fashion tastes and all of our pieces keep our environmental promise at the fore front of production.

An unexpected hug for our mommy model.
